Four-Week Workshop: Writing Poetry in the Grotesque. Purpose. Practice.
A free Rooster Moans workshop offered to those in the know.
I promise to hate you in the morning.
Begins: Monday 8/23/2010 Limited to the first 13 to register.
Using Philip Thomson's 1972 book The Grotesque as a framework, Susan Yount will update and explore some functions and purposes of the grotesque within recent, modern poetry. The grotesque makes us hesitate between being amused or appalled—shocked, repulsed and attracted at the same time. Participants will be encouraged to hone their own grotesque skills through a series of horrific & fantastic writing prompts.
The Grotesque outlines five functions and purposes of the grotesque in a horrifically all male review on the subject. This workshop aims to update and show the burlesque grotesque from a modern female perspective. Be prepared to experience anything from the ‘afflicted girls’ to Gaga’s bad romance.
Workshop leader Susan Yount is the publisher of Arsenic Lobster Poetry Journal and winner of the 2010 Poetry Center of Chicago Juried Reading Contest. She is also the Chicago Poetry Brothel's newly crowned Madame.
